Mary Mariutto & Tom Cubr
We have two special artists for our March & April Overland Gallery
MARY MARIUTTO
The infamous 9th Street Show in 1951 New York City was a breakout event for Abstract Expressionist painters like Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler and others, earning them critical recognition, while fundamentally changing the art world. My fascination with these Abstract Expressionist painters in midcentury NYC inspired this body of work.
I decided to paint as if I were an actual participant in the 1951
9th Street Show. I am influenced by the imagery and dynamics of this era, but continue to adopt current directions in painting. An evolutionary change has occurred in my work by exploring color and composition with the use of abstract shapes and figures.
The goal of this body of work is to create something new, where the past intersects with the present. My hope is to elevate my painting to a level of acceptance into the 9th Street Show.
TOM CUBR
I live in Harvard and have a studio in the Starline Building. I earned a degree in Art and Art History from Eastern Illinois University in 1983. During the last 15 years much of my work has consisted of Formalist abstractions in which compositions are garnered from satellite images of the earth’s surface. Color relationships and subtle technique are central aspects of my work.
